Preparing a traditional periodic assessment is a substantial undertaking. In addition to writing and formatting the exam paper, teachers may need to create a two-way test blueprint, answer sheet, answer key, and other supporting documents. Completing the entire package can easily take one to two weeks.
Building questions and exam files on the IES Cloud Platform connects test authoring, exam assembly, question and exam analysis, paper output, learning assessment, data analysis, learning records, targeted review, and remedial learning in a semi-automated or fully automated workflow. Most importantly, questions are no longer one-off Word documents. They become reusable, collaboratively editable school knowledge assets that continue to accumulate assessment evidence over time.

For a single-answer question, these may include question difficulty (A), cognitive level (B), and key concept (C), question type (D), question content (E), options (F), correct answer (G), and explanation (H), as illustrated in Figure 3-2.
The key difference between a conventional Word question and an IES cloud question is that the latter becomes part of a manageable question bank. It can be reused, searched, revised, and linked to assessment data. Through school-wide co-authoring and shared question banks, schools can gradually build localized assessment resources and reduce the need for teachers to recreate similar materials every year.

Define attributes such as difficulty, cognitive level, knowledge point, question type, answer, and explanation.Once questions are selected from the bank and assembled into an exam file, the same content can support multiple digital-assessment scenarios: synchronous assessment in a smart classroom, self-paced online assessment, and paper-based assessment with integrated paper-and-answer-sheet scanning. Teachers do not need to rebuild the content for each delivery mode.
In Manual Design, teachers can enter the exam file name (A), set the total points (B), filter question attributes (C), select questions (D), and save the completed exam file (E), as shown in Figure 3-3. Once a school has developed a robust question bank, periodic assessments, formative checks, and review quizzes can all be prepared much more efficiently.

The blueprint shown in Figure 3-4 cross-analyzes key concepts (A) and cognitive levels (B), while displaying question scores and their distribution (C). This gives teachers an immediate view of how well the assessment matches the intended curriculum and assessment plan.

Before administration, teachers can quickly identify an overconcentration in a particular question type, content area, or cognitive level and adjust the exam accordingly.

With IES, teachers can continue authoring in Word. By adding rule tags to each question and then using Import Design, IES can parse each question and its attributes automatically.
Tags are identified by braces { }. The question-type tag and {Answer} are required; the remaining attributes may be added as needed. Multiple-choice options use an English letter followed by a period, such as A., B., C., and D., without braces.
The official English template supports question-type commands such as {MultipleChoice}, {MultipleAnswers}, {TrueFalse}, {Blank}, {Correct}, {Connector}, and {Essay}. For a question group, place {QuestionGroup} at the beginning and {QuestionGroupEnded} at the end.
Bloom’s cognitive-level tags are {Remember}, {Understand}, {Apply}, {Analyze}, {Evaluate}, and {Create}. Additional supported attributes include {Answer}, {Explain}, {Point}, {Score}, {Level}, {Count}, and {RatePrompt}. These tags let teachers create structured data for question-bank management and exam analysis without leaving their familiar Word workflow.

Teachers do not need to abandon a familiar authoring method. By adding the required tags, they can bring questions into smart-classroom activities, online tests, or paper-based assessment workflows while continuously accumulating student-response and question-performance data.
Competency-based assessment increasingly asks students to apply knowledge in authentic contexts, interpret information, and connect ideas across disciplines. Teaching teams guided by Professor Hsin-Hsi Chen, for example, have shared texts, text-analysis resources, reading-and-writing assessments, and IES smart-assessment examples. Resources such as “Exploring Science with a Hand Dryer” demonstrate how authentic contexts, reading comprehension, interdisciplinary inquiry, and digital assessment can be integrated into one learning sequence.

It connects authoring, exam assembly, quality analysis, delivery, and learning data. With IES, teachers can reduce repetitive document preparation while gaining clearer visibility into exam structure and more efficient quality assurance.
When an IES question bank is connected with HiTeach classroom instruction, assessment data is no longer used only to calculate scores. It can immediately support interactive explanation, differentiated teaching, targeted review, and remedial learning. Moving from one-time exam files to reusable, collaboratively built, continuously enriched assessment resources is a practical step toward stronger long-term assessment capacity across a school.
