Teacher Empowerment and Professional Development Series IV: Examples of HiTeach AI GPT Teaching Activity Design

Issue No.: HB20240809C    Date: August 09, 2024   Author: Power Wu

This AI lesson plan design example illustrates how to apply generative AI within existing teaching activity designs, integrating AI assessment functions into teaching activities, and designing examples of teaching activity designs that automatically connect teaching method strategy modules, to leverage generative AI's auxiliary teaching functions and achieve the goal of reducing teaching burden or enhancing learning effectiveness.

✨I. HiTeach AI

HiTeach has various built-in AI technologies, including AI text analysis, AI speaking practice, AI Sokrates Summary Notice, and AI speech-to-text services. Now, HiTeach further integrates increasingly intelligent generative AI technology, providing a convenient set of prompt commands for easy use in classroom teaching or lesson preparation. Opening the GPT AI Assistant window will display various classroom teaching application command sets, including scoring command sets, question generation command sets, selection command sets, commonly used command sets, mind map command sets, etc. You can also customize command sets and design suitable commands based on course needs for repeated use.

When applying generative AI to assist with scoring and providing feedback on students' works or assignments through dialogue, teachers constantly need to copy and paste: copying student work to specific AI service, then copying AI's feedback and scores back into the grade sheet. Repeating this tedious process is required to complete grading and feedback for all students. This operation method is briefly referred to as the "Self-Service AI Flow."

HiTeach AI, on the other hand, automatically connects generative AI and has built-in prompt command templates. Teachers only need to apply template prompt commands or their own custom prompt commands. After HiTeach collects students' work data, this "live" data is automatically transmitted to and received by the AIGC service, which then automatically organizes AI's scores and feedback into the grade sheet. This automated workflow, which integrates student lists, interactive data, and AI intelligence, is briefly referred to as the "HiTeach AI Flow."

Comparing the Self-Service AI Flow and the HiTeach AI Flow, it can be observed that using the Self-Service AI Flow keeps teachers busy with manual operations, whereas the HiTeach AI Flow not only replaces manual labor with machines but also improves efficiency, as shown in Figure 1.

✨II. Introduction to HiTeach AI GPT Diverse Teaching Strategies

HiTeach is a new classroom teaching technology rooted in educational principles, balancing tradition with innovation. It aims to help teachers develop smart and engaging classrooms, making teaching more effortless, learning outcomes better, and the classroom atmosphere more enjoyable. Its core operational philosophy and application value are depicted in Figure 2: HiTeach AI GPT Diverse Teaching Strategy Combination Application Diagram (Power, 2024), which comprises two main parts: learning assessment types and teaching strategy modules.

Figure 2: HiTeach AI GPT Diverse Teaching Strategy Combination Application Diagram (Power, 2024)

The left side of the diagram illustrates the new learning assessment paradigm, which integrates advanced generative AI technology to bring artificial intelligence into the classroom. It assists teachers with grading assignments, scoring, providing feedback, and helps with classroom summarization, analysis, and explanation. This enables the implementation of teacher assessment, peer assessment, and AI assessment in the classroom, forming a three-in-one learning community of teachers, students, and AI. The right side of the diagram presents new teaching strategy modules, developed by integrating academic research on major classroom teaching methods and strategies from the past 50 years, which support seven major teaching strategy modules: cooperative learning, interactive learning, task-based learning, diverse assessment, differentiation, peer assessment, and group collaboration.

These learning assessment types and teaching strategies can be used independently or combined. For example, combining interactive learning, AI assessment, and peer assessment can create highly efficient learning scenarios, connecting teacher questioning, students answering using tablets, followed by AI grading and feedback, then peer assessment by students, and finally, the teacher guiding the whole class in a collaborative learning process. Combining these functional modules makes it easier to implement effective teaching methods such as Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Team-Based Learning (TBL), Peer Instruction (PI), Learning Communities, and MAPS. You no longer have to go it alone. By cleverly combining HiTeach strategy modules, classrooms can be more effortless, more efficient, and have a more engaging atmosphere.

✨III. Examples of HiTeach AI GPT Teaching Activity Design

By cleverly combining HiTeach's learning assessment types and teaching strategy modules, you can design effortless, efficient, and engaging teaching activities. Below are four examples of HiTeach AI teaching activity designs. Please refer to the video for explanations:

(I) HiTeach AI GPT Teaching Activity Design Example 1: Students return text + AI grading & comments

The first application example is to use the Cloze function of HiTeach to ask students to write a short essay within 150 words. After the students submit their text, the teacher can click the AI button to open the GPT AI Assistant window for using the text Scoring Prompts.

After reviewing or modifying the scoring criteria and selecting the option Add AI Comments, press the Try it button. In just a few moments, AI will scroing the essays and provide comments. The results can be sorted by score for easy review, then sent to students or used in class discussions. HiTeach automatically saves all student essays, AI scores, and comments for later analysis.

(II) HiTeach AI GPT Teaching Activity Design Example 2: Ask students to submit pictures + AI Scoring & comments

The second example is using AI to scoring picture. Students can create images based on scoring criteria from a worksheet. After they submit their pictures, click the AI button to open the scoring prompts. Modify the scoring criteria if needed, select the option to add AI comments, and press Try it. AI will generate scores and comments for each pictures, which will be automatically saved. This allows teachers to track students’ progress over time.

Use the picture question type of HiTeach subjective questions to ask AI to score and comment on the collected works.

(III) HiTeach AI GPT Teaching Activity Design Example 3: Mind map analysis of reading material (pictures, screenshots)

The third example demonstrates AI's ability to analyze reading materials(take image capture as an example). We can ask AI to generate a mind map summarizing the key points. Open the GPT AI Assistant window, select the pre-designed mind map prompt for the chosen reading text, review or modify the prompt, and use the selection tool to capture an area in the PowerPoint that you want to analyze. AI will process the content and generate a markdown-format mind map. Click the “Generate Mind Map page” button, and it will be displayed automatically. This mind map helps students check their understanding and serves as a useful framework for reading comprehension.

(IV) HiTeach AI GPT Teaching Activity Design Example 4: reading materials (pictures, screenshots) + AI questions & Contest Game

The fourth example introduces AI-generated questions and conducts a contest game on reading materials, using a fifth-grade English textbook chapter on chores as an example. Open the AI window, select the pre-designed prompt for the reading text, review or modify the prompt, and use the selection tool to highlight the relevant content in the PowerPoint. Click the Try it button, and AI will generate quiz questions. Next, click the “Contest” button to set up a competition event. You can configure the contest mode, response time, background music, and ranking display. For example, in survival mode, students who answer incorrectly are eliminated, while correct answers allow them to continue. If all students are eliminated, the teacher can press the all pass button to bring them back into the game. Once all questions are completed, the system automatically displays the ranking of top performers. Pressing the Transparency Mode button returns the interface to the PowerPoint slides.

With HiTeach AI , you can integrate AI with PowerPoint or e-books to enhance students' classroom learning. Simply prepare your teaching materials and AI prompts, and you can seamlessly incorporate AI intelligence into your lessons, making teaching more effective and engaging.

These four examples illustrate AI lesson plan design techniques, hoping to inspire teachers to apply the intelligence of generative AI to design more and more exciting teaching activity design examples.
