Teacher Hsu Da-Wei, Beixin Elementary School, New Taipei City, Taiwan

"Recalling my learning process from elementary school to university, the teachers I encountered all used traditional teaching methods, with the teacher as the center imparting knowledge to students. The dull classroom atmosphere was especially evident in mathematics class. When I became a teacher, I resolved to change this traditional teaching method so that I wouldn't just be like an elementary school teacher, but to make the classroom more lively and interesting." - Teacher Hsu Da-Wei, Beixin Elementary School, Xindian District, New Taipei City

Changing the Classroom Atmosphere Starting from Students

Determined to Change the Dull Mathematics Classroom
Teacher Hsu Da-Wei has always hoped not to be just an elementary school teacher. Determined to change the dull classroom that makes students unmotivated, Teacher Hsu actively applied to the New Taipei City Elementary School Mathematics Guidance Group to absorb more teaching methods and participated in various training sessions and seminars, collecting useful teaching aids. He constantly innovates teaching using HiTeach to make the classroom atmosphere more interesting and students more actively engaged in learning.

The Smart Life King of the Mathematics World
Teacher Hsu Da-Wei is dedicated to the research and development of mathematics education, investing in mathematics proficiency assessment and remedial teaching.
Many people fail to learn mathematics because it is "abstract," making it difficult for elementary school students to "imagine," coupled with a lack of integration with actual life experiences, leading to learning frustration. Therefore, the focus of mathematics education should be to give children a "feel" for mathematics. This "feel" comes not only from the teacher's professional literacy but also through technology that can activate classroom interaction, record the learning process, and thereby develop a student-centered teaching model that leads children to think, reflect, and find their own answers to problems, thus developing a feel for learning and a feel for life.

Developing Various Teaching Models and Aids

Diverse Teaching Aids Make Learning More Interesting
To give students a feel for mathematics, Teacher Hsu Da-Wei uses many teaching aids, such as geometric connecting cubes, fraction playing cards, playing cards, Cuisenaire rods, circular fraction boards, etc. As long as it can make the classroom more lively and students more interested in class, Teacher Hsu is willing to try any helpful teaching aid. Because of these diverse teaching aids, students can visually see abstract mathematical concepts and physically experience the structure of mathematics, making complex mathematics "concrete," eliminating students' frustration in learning and making them more interested in mathematics.

The Five "Learn" Teaching Model

Teacher Hsu Da-Wei, who teaches at Beixin Elementary School, integrates the smart teacher model of Beixin Elementary School into his teaching. Among them, the five-learn model combined with Team Model HiTeach TBL smart classroom is the most well-known. Using IRS to grasp learning status and control the teaching pace, and then using student tablets for in-group mutual learning and group cooperation to achieve tasks, this smart teaching model won the Special Award in the 2016 Smart Classroom Innovation Award.

The Five "Learn" Model of Beixin Elementary School

Explanation of the Five "Learn" Model
Step 1. Grasping Learning Ability
Using HiTeach's IRS function to confirm students' prior knowledge. If students lack sufficient prior knowledge, remedial teaching can be immediately carried out to equip students with the ability to enter the class.
Step 2. Guiding Learning with Hints
Using HiTA to present students' diverse thinking. Through teacher-student Q&A, gradually guide and clarify students' ideas to construct the logic of mathematical thinking.
Step 3. Peer-to-Peer Learning
Presenting diverse problem-solving methods on the whiteboard. Through in-group mutual learning and discussion among students, allow children to clarify their own and others' different ideas and accept different modes of thinking.
Step 4. Collaborative Group Learning
Through group cooperation, discuss and solve higher-level questions raised by the teacher. Students brainstorm and complete the task.
Step 5.Summary of Learning
Multiple students summarize their learning outcomes and conclusions from the lesson. Through different students' presentations, the classroom is no longer limited to a single idea or the teacher's perspective, truly implementing the student-centered concept.

In the course, Teacher Hsu Da-Wei used the IRS feedback system to instantly grasp the children's learning status, allowing teachers to accurately control the teaching pace. The classroom was transformed into a teacher following the students, allowing each student to express their ideas. Student tablets were also used to facilitate children's discussions, share their respective ideas, accept each other's thinking processes, and collaborate in groups to discuss and solve higher-level challenging questions.
Teacher Hsu Da-Wei's use of the Five "Learn" model combined with the HiTeach TBL smart classroom provided students with more and closer interaction and participation opportunities, making the classroom learning atmosphere more harmonious and active. As a result, it received unanimous approval from the judges and stood out from many participating classes, winning the 2016 Smart Classroom Innovation Award TBL Smart Classroom - Special Award.

Teacher Hsu Da-Wei represented Beixin Elementary School in Beijing, engaging in a co-teaching and differentiated instruction exchange on the topic of "Area" in mathematics with Teacher Liu Jia-ying from its sister school, Peixin Elementary School. The lesson content was integrated with a secret realm adventure, deeply engaging the students in the classroom. Combining technology and physical teaching materials, geometric teaching aids were magically retrieved from behind the screen, astonishing the teachers observing remotely.
This cross-strait remote lesson not only demonstrated the value of the HiTeach remote smart classroom but also allowed smart teachers from both sides to conduct synchronous remote lesson study, enabling knowledge transfer without geographical limitations and effectively realizing teacher professional growth.
