In the digital age, reading ability is no longer limited to print but extends to the integration and application of information. The Department of Education, Keelung City Government grandly held the "2025 Elementary School Keelung Reading Smart King" competition at the Teacher Training Center on May 6. Centered around the theme "Reading Gives Me Wings, Digital Tools Walk with Me," the competition attracted 41 school teams and 123 top young readers from across the city, emphasizing the importance of cultivating "Dual Reading Literacy"—combining reading and digital information skills.
Through the hardware-software integration of HiTeach and the "Tablets for Every Student" policy, the spirit of the PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) assessment was successfully implemented into digital testing, showcasing the fruitful results of the digital learning enhancement plan.
In response to the Ministry of Education's "Digital Learning Enhancement Plan," Keelung City has long been promoting digital reading and information literacy. At the competition site, every student was equipped with a tablet, smoothly operating the devices to participate in the "Digital Reading Challenge."
With the basic infrastructure of "Internet in Every Class, Tablets for Every Student" completed, the next core educational challenge is how to deepen its application. This competition breaks through the limitations of traditional paper tests. With "Dual Reading Literacy" as the core, it emphasizes that students must possess cross-media abilities, integrating in-depth comprehension of print materials with the application of digital information.
The HiTeach platform not only provided a stable testing environment but also helped teachers grasp competition data in real-time, moving educational decision-making towards a data-driven and precise approach, making learning fun.
The core feature of this competition lies in the dual-track parallel of "Digital Reading" and "Physical Creation." In the digital challenge segment, the question design strictly followed the PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) format, focusing on four major competency indicators:
Through HiTeach's Challenge Mode, after reading designated books like "The Witch from Earth" and "Youth Reading Taiwan," students had to react quickly, think deeply, and answer within a 1-minute limit per question. They had to make precise judgments regarding text details and chapter meanings, which is the ultimate embodiment of the competence-based teaching spirit.
The competition emphasizes "Dual Reading Literacy," encouraging students to expand their horizons through both text and digital resources. Students had the physical book "Class 4-5, The Magic Teacher" on their laps while using tablets to answer questions online via HiTeach. This model of "deep thinking by flipping through print, efficient responding by using digital tools" is precisely the core vision of Keelung City's promotion of reading education—making reading a central part of self-directed learning and life exploration.
The Keelung City Education Department stated that through the design of PIRLS-style questions and the analysis of HiTeach test data, they can help teachers accurately grasp the current reading comprehension status of upper-grade students, thereby adjusting teaching strategies.
TEAM Model will continue to deepen the application of AI and real-time interaction in reading education. The successful execution of the "Keelung Reading Smart King" not only witnessed the outstanding practical competence of the students but also established an excellent paradigm for implementing educational policies through digital teaching tools.
In addition to Keelung City, Hsinchu County will also host a dual reading literacy competition. Teachers are welcome to lead children to register enthusiastically and enhance their dual reading literacy skills.
